A job is an opportunity

20 to 30 years ago a job for life is what was on offer to those looking to get in at the bottom, follow the rules and work up the industrial corporate ladder with quarterly reviews, annual pay increases and promotions every few years. A job was to follow a set of rules laid down by your employer, follow the rules, perform the tasks, get a watch and all was well. We were conditioned for this environment since birth, by our parents and our school teachers.

Today things are very different, there are no “jobs for life” any more. The economy has changed over the last decade to one where all businesses are volatile and big industrial corporations are meaner and leaner than ever. The public sector is being privatised at a quick pace which will take valuable public services and hand them over to the industrial mindset of minimum investment and maximum return.

A job should be viewed as an opportunity not a given right to sit back and go with the flow. Create the flow, make the job. You don’t have to be a bootstrapping entrepreneur to choose yourself. Don’t look to your boss for permission, they don’t want the risk. Effect change, stand out, make a difference and you will have a job for life, you are the job no matter where you actually work.
